Ian Burgess

Ian is a results-orientated, business-led IT leader who is deeply committed to harnessing technology as a force for good – leveraging the growing political appetite and opportunity for tech-enabled care to deliver solutions that directly improve lives. He is passionate about using data ethically and effectively to encourage independent living, ease the burden on the care industry, and deliver better outcomes at scale.

Not only does he relish the opportunity to challenge the status quo by delivering ground-breaking solutions in the healthcare sector, but he’s been recognised as one of the top UK CIOs for the last 5 years. In 2024, Ian ranked among the Top 3 CIOs according to the CIO100 list. Alongside his role as Managing Director of Canary Care, Ian is the Chief Technology Officer for the Luxion group and assumes responsibility for our tech partner, Procode.

Canary Care stories

Sam is an 80-year old gentleman in the late stages of Dementia. He was living by himself and was starting to leave his home in a vulnerable state. During the winter months, Sam was found in the middle of the night by the police while he was walking his dog.

After setting up Canary Care in Sam’s home, his children were able to remotely monitor their dad so he could live independently for an extra 10 weeks, so that he could enjoy Christmas in his own home like he wanted.

Chandra was admitted to hospital after a fall at home where she broke her hip. After weeks of rehabilitation, Chandra’s family were still understandably worried about her returning home without around the clock care.

After installing Canary Care products, it became clear Chandra was very capable on her own – with our motion sensors showing her turning on the shower, using the kettle, and moving freely from room to room. In just 4 weeks, Chandra no longer needed daily care visits and her family had true peace of mind.

Bob has early onset Dementia and his family have always been keen for him to remain at home. He regularly takes medication for his high blood pressure, but after a spike in readings, they were concerned for his wellbeing.

We installed a sensor inside his medicine cupboard so that if Bob didn’t open the door at a certain time every day, his family were notified. Not only did this lead to better medicine management, but it gave Bob’s family confidence that they’d know exactly when to step in and help.

After showing limited mobility and possible dehydration, Anne’s family were concerned about how she was managing everyday tasks in her home. Once we installed a Canary Care system, we helped her family identify that she was staying in the living room for long periods of time and rarely used the kitchen.

We helped set up alert notifications based around a lack of movement, if the fridge wasn’t opened for long periods, and if the kettle wasn’t turned on. This meant Anne’s family were able to regularly check in, remind her to drink and move about – which improved her mobility, nutrition and hydration, all while reducing the risk of needing hospital visits.

Canary Care has literally been a life-saver for my elderly father, who is an insulin-dependent diabetic. It enables me to contact emergency services when he has been unresponsive, and the service from staff is always exceptional. I will always be grateful to them.
