Sensor placement tips

The best placement for your sensors depends on what you’re looking to monitor, but here’s some general tips and tricks around how to avoid activity blind spots, and how to make keep your insight as accurate as possible.

The best locations for your sensors depend on which activity you want to monitor. As a starting point, we suggest:

  • Door sensors are used on the front and back of doors.
  • Multi-Function sensors work well when placed on door frames, walls, or ceilings to understand someone’s movement, as well as light levels and temperature in each room (for example a bedroom, kitchen or living room).
  • Humidity sensors can be placed in bathrooms to help you monitor if someone is using it for showering or bathing regularly, or in any room where you want to check the conditions for mould growth.
  • Vibration sensors can be used on chairs, beds, microwaves, and placed on cupboards or drawers to see whether or not cupboards storing medication have been accessed.
  • Smart Plugs should be plugged into any plug socket, and then your appliance plugs into the smart plug so you can monitor its usage.

Motion sensors work best when positioned in doorways on the top of door frames, facing into the room you’re looking to monitor movement in. This makes sure room-to-room movement isn’t missed or caught in a blind spot.

We recommend Multi-Function Sensors are placed at chest height, across the path of movement in and out of the room you want to monitor. This helps make sure that the right movement is detected, and any pets moving around the house aren’t picked up.

It’s best to avoid placing sensors on the walls behind doors, near radiators, in direct sunlight, or facing windows. All of these locations could lead to external movement being picked up where it shouldn’t, or some movement not being tracked properly due to a lack of visibility.

If you’re worried about a vulnerable person tampering with the sensors in their home, we suggest placing them on the ceiling over doorways, pointing directly down over the path of the movement. Our sensors are small and silent, so you’ll get all the insights you need – without the intrusion.
